Pronex Cervical Traction: Be careful before you buy this one....

Welcome back I'm Rich and today as part of my series on cervical radiculopathy I'd like to review with you the Pronex Cervical Traction Unit.

Pronex is a one piece device about the size of a large shoebox. It has a sculpted soft plastic piece that cradles your head at the base of your skullpronex-cervical-traction-unit, and then it's got these air bellows that rest on your shoulders. You lay flat on the floor with your head resting in the cradle, strap your head in for support then inflate and deflate the air bellows with a blood pressure like air bulb. It comes with a carrying case and a CD that explains how to use it correctly and it's actually quite simple to use. I bought mine online and you'll see it priced somewhere between $300 and $500.

Now unfortunately this pricey little traction unit was not very helpful for treating my cervical radiculopathy. Actually, this unit generates its forces for traction by forcing the air bellows down against the tops of your shoulders to force your skull and spine up into traction. If you're already suffering from an impinged nerve, this kind of traction can actually irritate it more than it can help it. It really depends on exactly which vertebrae are compressed and which nerves are affected. Unfortunately I had to stop using my Pronex Traction Unit until I got over my cervical radiculopathy, but now that I'm recovered I use it several times a week, it just feels good to use. Definitely consult with a medical professional that your insurance recognizes, since you're more likely to get the cost covered by your insurance if your doctor prescribes it, depending on your coverage. Be careful with this one, it could mean a lot of money for something that won't help you right away.

Remember your best bet is to talk to your favorite medical professionals and let them advise you on the best course of action to take.
